Abstract
European and American people who visited Japan in the edge XIX – XX centuries represented the white race. The white people have been associated by the Japanese perception with the modern civilization. It had become to mean being modern to behave like the white people do: to sit on a chair instead of a mat, to eat with a silver dinner set instead of wooden chop sticks, to wear blouses and skirts instead of a kimono, to eat meat and bread instead of rice and fish, not to get exposed to the sun for a long time in order to not let the skin grow dark from tanning. E. g., eating beef had also been officially confirmed.
